Overview

Since Exchange Online doesn't support IMAP, UITS recommends the Evolution client for Linux users.

The Evolution Mail client supports Office 365 through the evolution-ews plugin, starting in evolution-ews v3.27.91 and above. The plugin provides Exchange Web Services and modern authentication support, required to access Office 365 mail with Duo MFA. Open Evolution Email, if you open it the first time you will see a window like that: Click on the Forward button. If you have a backup of Evolution Email you can restore your Evolution Email from the backup if you want to. Evolution is an application for managing email, calendars, contacts, tasks, and notes. It is the default mail client for GNOME and includes support for IMAP, Microsoft Exchange Server, Novell GroupWise, Kolab, LDAP, WebDAV, CalDAV, and many other services and protocols. Oct 31, 2014 Well, Evolution is the classic mail client that caters to the classic user, especially if they happen to be using the Gnome desktop interface, and it is designed to be as close as possible to Outlook, to help lure potential business customers. To configure the Evolution client to access the Office 365 environment, follow the steps below. Note that these instructions use Evolution 3.6.2 and the evolution-ews plugin version 3.6. If you have not already done so, install the evolution-ews package using your favorite package manager. This document assumes evolution-ews version 3.6.

For calendaring to work correctly on Linux in parts of Indiana that use Eastern Time, make sure to set the time zone to Eastern Time (US & Canada). Do not use Indiana (East).

Instructions

To set up your Exchange Online account with the Evolution email client on Linux:

  1. Open Terminal, and run the following command:

Do this even if you already have Evolution installed; this command adds the EWS component you need to connect to Exchange Online.
  2. When prompted, enter your Linux administrator credentials (not your IU username and passphrase).
  3. Once apt-get has completed, Evolution will appear in your list of applications. Open Evolution. A 'Welcome' dialog should appear. Click Next until you get to the 'Identity' tab.
  4. On the 'Identity' tab, enter your name and your IU username followed by @iu.edu (do this no matter what your primary email address is). Click Next.
  5. Evolution will attempt to look up your account details for several seconds. You can also click Skip Lookup.
  6. On the Receiving Email tab, from the 'Server Type' drop-down, choose Exchange Web Services. Click Fetch URL.
If this step fails, manually enter this host URL: https://outlook.office365.com/EWS/Exchange.asmx.
  7. If prompted, enter your IU passphrase. Once authenticated, the Receiving Email tab will have the Exchange Online URS. Click Next.
If you are not prompted to authenticate with Duo, and you see an error that says 'We're sorry, access is not allowed because you are not enrolled. Please contact your organization's IT help desk for assistance', you'll need to enroll a device in Duo before you can proceed. For more, see Get started with Two-Step Login (Duo) at IU.
  8. Select your preferences in the dialog boxes.
  9. In the final dialog box, click Apply. You will then see the main Evolution interface. You may need to click the Inbox to start populating from your Exchange account.
Evolution will store a local copy of all your email; it is not possible to have only a few days or a few months of email stored. For this reason, Evolution may appear busy for a few minutes to a few hours.
